Former Minister and current Matale District United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) MP Janaka Bandara Tennakoon has been arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in connection with a murder committed in 1999.
Issuing a media release, Police Headquarters stated the MP was taken into custody as part of an investigation into an incident that occurred on December 14, 1999 in Dambulgamuwa, Matale, where one person was shot and killed and another injured.
As part of this probe, the MP had been summoned to CID Headquarters on October 5. However, he had not presented himself to the CID and had admitted himself to a private hospital in Colombo, where he was arrested by the CID at around 3.30pm today as part of its investigation into the murder.
The MP currently remains at the hospital under police guard, as the CID conducts further investigations.
